CTEC Registered Tax Preparers must complete 20 hours of continuing education each year from a CTEC-approved provider: 10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax updates, 2 hours of federal tax ethics and 5 hours of California tax law. Our 20 Hour Federal and California Tax Course covers all 20 hours in a single course.
Your education must be completed and your registration renewed by October 31. CTEC allows a late renewal period with an additional fee, but you may not prepare returns for a fee until your registration is current.
Attorneys, CPAs and United States Enrolled Agents are exempt from registering with CTEC, along with certain employees working under their supervision.
Yes. CTEC-registered preparers are exempt from the IRS AFTR course, so the 15 federal hours in your CTEC education can also qualify you for an AFSP Record of Completion when the course is reported to the IRS with your PTIN.
