2026 Enrolled Agent Continuing Education Requirements

United States Enrolled Agents must complete continuing education with an IRS-approved provider to keep their enrollment active.

United States Enrolled Agent An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns. 72 hours of continuing education every 3 years, of which at least 16 hours and 2 hours of ethics must be completed yearly. 30 Hour Federal Tax Course. Please note that Enrolled Agents do not receive IRS credit for AFTR programs, so do not purchase the 18 Hour Federal Tax Course - AFTR and AFSP Bundle or the 6 Hour Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course. How many hours of continuing education does an Enrolled Agent need?

Enrolled Agents must complete 72 hours of continuing education during each three-year enrollment cycle. At least 16 hours, including 2 hours of ethics, must be completed every year. Our 30 Hour Federal Tax Course covers more than the yearly minimum.

Can Enrolled Agents take the AFTR course for credit?

No. Enrolled Agents do not receive IRS continuing education credit for the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course, so do not purchase the 18 Hour Federal Tax Course - AFTR and AFSP Bundle or the 6 Hour Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course.

I only need my ethics hours. Which course should I take?

Our 2 Hour Federal Tax Ethics Course provides the 2 hours of ethics required each year.
